45 Supplications (Duas) Every Muslim Should Know

The supplication (dua) is a weapon of the believer. It is one of the best ways for a believer to connect with his Maker. Allah in the Qur’an commands the believers call out to Him:

And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided. [Qur’an 2:186]

In another verse Allah tells Muhammad (pbuh) to tell his followers:

Say, [O Muhammad], “I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone.” [Qur’an 72:20].

Perhaps one of the most beautiful verses in which Allah explicitly

In general, you can make a supplication in any language that you are comfortable with but those mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah are greater in eloquence, meaning, blessing, and effect. Therefore,  I have collected about 45 of them from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) which I feel are very important and that every Muslim should try his/her best to memorize or at least make a habit to regularly recite even via an app or small booklet. The source of them are all from the very popular Fortress of the Muslim, which is perhaps the most popular supplication book in the Muslim world right now. The book has far more collection of supplications.

All of them are circumstantial supplications, which means that they are to be uttered after a particular event occurs as taught to us by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). One of the reasons he taught us such supplications was so that we can constantly keep our tongues wet with the remembrance of Allah. We are told in the Qur’an to remember Allah at all times and such supplications help us remember Him all of the time:

And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times. [Qur’an 4:103]

All of them can be easily memorized because they are not very long.

O Allah, Owner of this perfect call and Owner of this prayer to be performed, bestow upon Muhammad al-waseelah and al-fadeelah and send him upon a praised platform which You have promised him. Verily, You never fail in Your promise.’

Al-Fadeelah – A rank above the rest of creation

Praised platform – One in which all of creation will praise him on, in order to bring about the account quickly and be relieved from the lengthy standing or the role of intercession

13 – After the End of an Obligatory Prayer (Fardh)

There are many supplications mentioned in the sunnah to be read after the obligatory prayer. I have only chosen two of them.

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner, to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things omnipotent.O Allah, none can prevent what You have willed to bestow and none can bestow what You have willed to prevent, and no wealth or majesty can benefit anyone, as from You is all wealth and majesty.

Following is read only following the Fajr prayer after ending the prayer with salam:

O Allah, I ask You for knowledge which is beneficial and sustenance which is good, and deeds which are acceptable

14 – For Seeking Guidance After Forming a Decision (Istikhara)

On the authority of Jabir Ibn Abdullah: The Prophet (pbuh) would instruct us to pray for guidance in all of our concerns, just as he would teach us a chapter from the Qur’an. He (pbuh) would say, If any of you intends to undertake a matter then let him pray two supererogatory units (two rakah nafl) of prayer and after which he should supplicate:

O Allah, I seek Your counsel by Your knowledge and by Your power I seek strength and I ask You from Your immense favour, for verily You are able while I am not and verily You know while I do not and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know this affair -and here he mentions his need- to be good for me in relation to my religion, my life, and end, then decree and facilitate it for me, and bless me with it, and if You know this affair to be ill for me towards my religion, my life, and end, then remove it from me and remove me from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it be and make me satisfied with such.

One who seeks guidance from his Creator and consults his fellow believers and then remains firm in his resolve does not regret, for Allah has said:

And consult them in the affair. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah. [Qur’an 3:159]

15 – Remembrance in the Morning and Evening

The following supplications are very important and are a form of protection for the believer from the evil eye, evil jinns/men, black magic, etc. The morning time is generally accepted to be between dawn and sunrise, however, there is disagreement among Muslim scholars as to what it means by evening. It is generally held to be between Asr and Maghrib prayers.

There are many supplications for this category, but I am choosing only four. However, I encourage everyone to know and memorize them all due to their immense benefit and blessing.

Dua 1

We have reached the evening and at this very time unto Allah belongs all sovereignty, and all praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner, to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things omnipotent. My Lord, I ask You for the good of this night and the good of what follows it and I take refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what follows it. My Lord, I take refuge in You from laziness and senility. My Lord, I take refuge in You from torment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.

If it’s the morning, then same as above except that the person begins with:

Dua 2

If morning:

O Allah, by your leave we have reached the morning and by Your leave we have reached the evening, by Your leave we live and die and unto You is our resurrection

If evening:

O Allah, by Your leave we have reached the evening and by Your leave we have reached the morning, by Your leave we live and die and unto You is our return.

Dua 3

This is one of the most powerful supplications for seeking forgiveness. It is referred to as Sayyid Al-Istighfar (leader of the supplications for forgiveness). The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said about it that if somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.

O Allah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped except You, You created me and I am Your servant and I abide to Your covenant and promise as best I can, I take refuge in You from the evil of which I have committed. I acknowledge Your favor upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You.

Dua 4

The following is to be said three times in the morning and evening. It is one of the best forms of protection. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said that whoever says it three times in the morning will not suffer sudden affliction till the evening, and whoever says it three times in the evening will not suffer sudden affliction till the morning:

In the name of Allah with whose name nothing is harmed on earth nor in the heavens and He is The All-Seeing, The All-Knowing

16 – Before Sleeping

In Your name O Allah, I live and die.

O Allah, verily You have created my soul and You shall take it’s life, to You belongs it’s life and death. If You should keep my soul alive then protect it, and if You should take it’s life then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You to grant me good health.

The Prophet (S) would place his right hand under his cheek when about to sleep and would say three times:

O Allah, save me from your punishment on the day you resurrect your servants.

17 – When Experiencing Unrest, Fear, Apprehensiveness During Sleep

I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the madness and appearance of devils.

‘O Allah, make what is lawful enough for me, as opposed to what is unlawful, and spare me by Your grace, of need of others.’

It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also used to make the following supplication often. It may be useful so that we do not fall into heavy debt in the first place:

O Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being over powered by men

23 – For One Whose Affairs Have Become Difficult

O Allah, there is no ease except in that which You have made easy, and You make the difficulty, if You wish, easy.

24 – Placing Children Under Allah’s Protection

It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used invoke the following supplication for Al-Hassan and Al-Hussain and stated that Ibrahim (pbuh) used to say this very same supplication for his sons Ismail and Ishaq.

To Allah we belong and unto Him is our return.O Allah, recompense me for my affliction and replace it for me with something better.

28 – Supplication for the Deceased During the Funeral Prayer

There are many different supplications reported. The following is perhaps the most popular.

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whom among us You keep alive, then let such a life be upon Islam, and whom among us You take unto Yourself, then let such a death be upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us stray after him

Some people find them too long to remember because funerals do not happen often enough so people forget especially in the West. In that case, you can just memorize the following and just repeat it over and over again during the funeral:

34 – After Eating

All praise is for Allah who fed me this and provided it for me without any might nor power from myself.

35 – Supplication for the Host

If you’re ever invited to a gathering and provided food, then you should make the following supplication for the host:

39 – To the One Who Does You a Favor

May Allah reward you with goodness

40 – Fear of Shirk

Falling into shirk (polytheism) is the fundamental greatest sin before Allah. It is one of the main reasons that prophets were sent. There is not hardly a page in the Qur’an where Allah does not remind the believers of His Oneness and warn them against associating partners with Him in worship or any other way or form.
